Trust and vulnerability are important. And they go hand in hand (in my opinion, anyway). I mean, obviously a huge degree of trust is required from the submissive. They are (often quite literally) putting their physical, mental, and emotional health, their very lives in someone elses hands, at a level that many people would find unsettling, or even disturbing.
